Fray Francisco Palou (1723-1789) was a Spanish Franciscan friar who came to California in 1749 as part of the Spanish missionary effort. He became a disciple of Father Junipero Serra, and worked closely with him in founding several of the missions in California. In addition to his missionary work, Palou was also a prolific writer, documenting the history and culture of the missions in his journals and other writings. He was known for his devotion to the preservation of indigenous cultures and languages, and his efforts to improve the lives of indigenous peoples in California. Palou died in 1789, and was buried at Mission San Francisco de Asis, which he helped found. He is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of the California missions.
